Stroud

Situated within the Great Lakes Shire Council Stroud is 30minutes from Gloucester, Barrington & Raymond Terrace, 1 hour from Newcastle CBD, Beaches, Hunter Valley Vineyards, 75 minutes from the Central Coast & 2.5hrs from Sydney CBD.

Historic Stroud was first established in 1826 for itís farming suitability, due to its rich black soils and fresh running streams and rivers. It was the most important settlement in the Australian Agricultural Companyís Port Stephens Estate. Many fine buildings were constructed from locally made bricks with floors of rosewood, doors and fittings of cedar.

Today Stroud has a great infrastructure. Many of the original buildings remain. We have four doctors, an aged care lodge, Gloucester hospital only 30 minutes away, a supermarket, craft stores, gallery, antiques, eateries, hotel, country club, Italian restaurant, public swimming pool, hardware, butcher, hairdresser, newsagency and post office (both with banking facilities) and Vineyards. Stroudís modern conveniences make it just about independent of nearby communities, it not only offers location, but a picture postcard setting.

The freshwater creeks boast colonies of platypus and you can watch the dolphins play in the Karuah River. Of course there is also canoeing, boating fishing and swimming if you feel inclined.

Stroudís old style morals and ethics are extremely attractive to families, yetalsore tired folk, chasing a laid back lifestyle with country values and hospitality. With a population of around 600 people, where else would you find the infrastructure that it has to offer.
